The family wanted a kitchen they could eat in and a way into the garden that did not go through the cellar. The house is a 1934 murermestervilla, the brick house type that lines much of Valby. Its narrow kitchen sat at the back, and the ground floor is 60 cm above the lawn.
We opened the back wall of the old kitchen and added a timber garden room of 25 m², three steps below the house and one step above the lawn. The steps run the full width of the opening, so they double as a bench.
A long rooflight follows the old brick wall and brings daylight deep into the kitchen. Bricks from the opening were cleaned and reused for the terrace. The Douglas fir cladding is untreated and will turn silver-grey within a few years.
